Team Skills Challenge

Team Skills Challenge is a fun and competitive session designed to put the children’s skills to the test while introducing the importance of teamwork, communication and working together towards a shared goal. The class is divided into teams before the coach demonstrates a series of different skill-based challenges.

For each round, the teams are given time to discuss the challenge and decide together which child will represent them. This encourages children to think about the different strengths within their team rather than simply choosing the same person every time. It also gives them responsibility for making decisions together, listening to one another and supporting whoever is selected to take part.

The format gently introduces the experience of performing under a little pressure, with children completing challenges while their teammates watch and encourage them. Emphasise that success is not only about winning; having a go, staying composed, trying their best and supporting their teammates are equally important parts of the session.

An important lesson within Team Skills Challenge is understanding that we don't always get to do the activity we would choose ourselves. Children may sometimes need to step forward for their team and, at other times, allow somebody else to have their turn. Encourage patience, fairness and positive reactions to the team's decisions.

Keep the atmosphere upbeat and supportive throughout. Celebrate effort, improvement, good teamwork and encouragement alongside successful performances, helping the children understand that every member of the team can make a valuable contribution.
