Choreography Week
Pirate Choreography Week is a fun and imaginative session where children work in pairs to learn and perform a sequence of exciting movements inspired by the kind of action they might see in a pirate adventure. The coach introduces the choreography in manageable sections, demonstrating each part with a child before giving the pairs time to practise together.
As the sequence develops, children are encouraged to watch carefully, remember the order of the movements and work with their partner to piece each section together. This provides a playful way of developing memory retention and sequencing, as children gradually build several individual movements into one complete routine.
Working in pairs also introduces important elements of teamwork, patience and problem-solving. Children need to communicate, help one another remember what comes next and practise at a pace that works for both partners. If something goes wrong, encourage them to work together, reset and try again rather than becoming frustrated.
The choreography also challenges children to develop control, coordination and awareness of their partner. Although the movements should feel exciting and theatrical, the emphasis should always be on performing them with control and working together rather than speed or force.
Most importantly, Pirate Choreography Week should capture the children's imaginations. Encourage them to enjoy the theatrical side of the session and have fun performing the sort of dramatic moves they might normally only expect to see in a pirate movie, while developing valuable physical, social and thinking skills along the way.
