Gladiator Battles

Gladiator Battles Week is an exciting, high-energy finale designed to bring the term to a memorable close. The children are divided into three evenly matched teams, arranged broadly from oldest to youngest, before taking turns to represent their team in a series of three-way battles in the arena.

For each round, one child from each team enters the arena equipped with a mask, shield and foam sword. Points are awarded according to the finishing positions — 3 points for the winner, 2 points for second place and 1 point for third — with the scores contributing towards the overall team competition.

As the competition develops, an extra tactical element can be introduced. If one team begins to establish a lead, the children representing the teams in second and third place can choose to form a temporary alliance, working together tactically against the current leader before competing against each other for first and second place. This introduces children to strategy, decision-making, communication and adapting tactics as circumstances change.

Encourage children to think beyond simply rushing into the battle. Using their shield effectively, choosing when to attack, recognising threats and opportunities, and responding to the actions of two opponents all form part of the challenge. Reinforce good control, fair play and respect for opponents throughout.

The atmosphere is a huge part of Gladiator Battles Week. Encourage teammates to support and cheer for one another, celebrate good play across all three teams and keep the competition positive and good-natured.

As the final class of the term, this session should feel like a celebration of everything the children have achieved. Keep the energy high, build excitement towards the final rounds and aim for every child to finish the term feeling involved, successful and excited to return for their next Little Musketeers adventure.
