Choreography Week

Star Wars Choreography Week is an imaginative and creative session where children work together to design and perform their own action sequence inspired by the excitement of a space adventure. Unlike Pirate Choreography Week, where children follow a set routine, this session gives them greater freedom to develop their own choreography and ideas.

The coach introduces a few essential elements that every routine must include, such as using “the Force”, a slow-motion sequence, and a four-move attack-and-block sequence. The children then work with their partner to decide how these elements will fit together, what order they will perform them in and what additional movements they would like to add.

The activity encourages creativity, teamwork and problem-solving, as partners need to listen to one another, share ideas and make decisions together. It also develops memory and sequencing, as children practise their routine and learn to move smoothly from one section to the next.

Encourage children to think about control, timing, coordination and awareness of their partner, rather than simply making their routine faster or more complicated. The slow-motion element is particularly useful for encouraging controlled movement, while the attack-and-block sequence reinforces the importance of reacting and working together.

Most importantly, give the children permission to use their imagination and make the routine their own. The finished sequences don't need to be perfect — the emphasis is on creativity, cooperation and having fun while giving children the confidence to turn their own ideas into a performance.
